The 2.5-by-4-inch compact cassette that overtook vinyl albums and passed by eight-track tapes in the 1970s and '80s is experiencing a bit of a comeback.
One survey found that 10% individuals over 18 years old purchase, own and listen to cassette tapes. An interesting piece of information - especially considering the decline in CD sales in recent years.
Cassette sales are up about 50% this year compared to last year, but the Nielsen SoundScan numbers don’t take into account all the collectors scouring eBay and flea markets for private sales. The president of the US’ largest cassette tape manufacturer confirms there has been a surge in sales, and says that the cassette has never truly been finished.
The peak of cassette sales came in 1990, when more than 442 million cassettes were shipped. But then began the cassette's decline and the rise of the CD, which peaked in 2000 before giving way to the digital platform.
